AMALGAM (SILER) FILLINGS
When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and/or hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.
New silver fillings take 24 hours to reach their final set, until that time either have a soft diet or chew on the opposite side. They can be sensitive to hot and cold liquids and other foods for the first 4-6 weeks. If you have any concerns please call the office.
Sometimes due to the effects of the anesthetic it is difficult to make sure that your bite is exactly right. If after the anesthetic is gone your bite feels off, or if you have any discomfort in chewing please call us to set up an appointment. A minor adjustment is usually all it takes to make you comfortable. Don’t wait too long. Teeth can become quite sensitive if the bite is “high”.
CROWN AND/OR BRIDGE
When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and/or hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.
While your custom restoration is being created you will be wearing a temporary crown or bridge. The temporary protects your teeth and gums as well as prevents the surrounding teeth from shifting and changing the fit of the custom restoration.
Please make the following changes to your normal eating and oral hygiene habits while you have a temporary.
If the bite feels uneven or if you have constant pain please call the office.
If the temporary crown comes off please call the office. If you are able use toothpaste and place the temporary back on until you are able to come in.
SCALING & ROOT PLANING
After the procedure take Tylenol or Advil before the anesthetic wears off. Continue taking 1 tablet every 4 hours for the next 2 days as needed. A saltwater solution (½ tsp salt + ½ tsp soda + 8 oz warm water) swished in the mouth for 2-3 minutes every hour may make your mouth more comfortable. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol and hard crunchy foods for the next few days.
Smoking should be stopped in order to promote healing. Success of the treatment will be greatly reduced by the chemicals in the cigarette smoke.
If an antibiotic was used in your treatment do not floss for 2 days in that area.
As tissue heals some cold sensitivity can occur. Use the Perio Check rinse and Sensodyne toothpaste or fluoride wash not containing alcohol.
Continue with any other oral hygiene aids (Sonicare, Rota-dent, Peridex mouth rinse) as discussed.

FLUORIDE
Directions for Care after Treatment:
Fluoride varnish was used for your fluoride treatment today. It safely provides optimal protection, delivering the highest fluoride concentration possible, while eliminating the yellow discoloration of traditional fluoride varnishes. To obtain the maximum benefit during the 4-6 hour treatment period, we ask that you follow the recommendations below after you leave our office:
After application the fluoride may appear white and streaky on the tooth surface (similar to plaque). A thorough brushing and flossing will remove any remaining fluoride.
“The American Dental Association supports the use of fluoride varnishes as safe and efficacious within a caries prevention program that includes caries diagnosis, risk assessment, and regular dental care.”
– American Dental Association House of Delegates, Resolution 37H, November 2004
RESIN (WHITE) FILLINGS
When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and/or hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.
Since white fillings set immediately, after the numbness wears off, you may chew normally.
ROOT CANAL
Directions for Care after Treatment:
When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and/or hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.
After root canal therapy has been either started or completed you will have a temporary filling in the tooth. This filling takes about a half hour to harden. Please do not eat until that time has gone by.
You will need to have a permanent filling or crown placed on your tooth within 1 month of the root canal being completed. If this is not done, the tooth may fracture or develop new decay under the temporary filling which may cause your root canal to fail.
VIBRAJECT
The high vibration of the needle stimulates the nerve endings to help block the transmission of pain feelings to the brain.
